Bat Survey - Roath, Cardiff

Background

In September, we visited this property in Cardiff to conduct a protected species scoping survey for bats. This property was a former bakery that used to have an old brick oven to bake bread, but is now disused, with the oven demolished.

Survey Results

Usually, when we conduct a PRA, we recommend additional activity surveys as per the bat survey guidelines. This property is a rare example of an occasion where we do not recommend additional surveys. Bats require stable environments for their roosts, where they are protected from the elements. The missing wall and roofing sheets in this old bakery meant that there was just one, open draughty room. Not exactly a stable and sheltered environment suited for bats.

95% of the time, after a PRA, we recommend additional surveys. This project falls under that 5% that does not require any additional surveys, so the owner was able to secure planning permission with just the initial scoping survey.
