Bat Survey - Llangadog, Carmarthenshire
Background
In July of last year, we got to carry out a scoping survey of these barns on a beautiful plot of land that has the Avon Brán tributary running through it. Barns may be one of the places you would envision bats typically roosting in, and we certainly found evidence that bats had been roosting in these barns.
Scoping Survey
When we carry out a preliminary roost assessment (PRA), we are looking for evidence of bats - whether than be bats themselves, their droppings, or feeding remains. While we didn’t see any bats directly, we found plenty of droppings and feeding remains that let us know these buildings are indeed bat roosts.
Bat Ecology - what do they eat?
All UK bat species are insectivorous, and have a preference for Lepidoptera - butterflies and moths. The wing cases of these insects are indigestible to bats, so when we say ‘feeding remains’, what we typically mean are butterfly and moth wings, as you can see in this picture!
