Bat Survey - Porthcawl, Bridgend
Background
Near the end of this year's bat season, we completed a series of bat surveys at this semi-detached family home that was seeking planning permission to build an extension.
Initial scoping survey
During our Preliminary Roost Assessment, we identified several gaps that bats could use to enter the building, including gaps under the soffits that led directly to the loft space.

However, the area surrounding the home was suburban and built up, with limited natural spaces - not exactly ideal for bats. Additionally, the most suitable roof lining for bats is bitumen felt. Bat claws can get stuck in breathable
membranes, and unlined roofs don't provide the warm and protected roost area between the roof tiles and lining. This house had an unlined roof, so not exactly great for bats, but there were still potential roosting areas between roof timbers and the roof slates, and under ridge tiles.

After discussing next options with the client, it was decided that we would conduct a single emergence survey to ensure we had a full and thorough bat report for them to submit to the council for planning.
Emergence Survey
We set up thermal cameras around the whole property and filmed over sunset. No bats were filmed emerging from the building, so the plans could go ahead without the necessity for a licence with NRW.
