Tree Survey - Brecon Beacons

This beautiful old oak tree in the Brecon Beacons was unfortunately due to be removed. A major reason why bats are so protected is because so much of their natural habitat - mature woodland with veteran trees - are being cleared for agricultural or urbanisation purposes. It is a shame that this is sometimes necessary, but it is important that we are involved in order to ensure no bats are harmed when the tree comes down and that the roost is replaced, so bats aren't losing out on an important home.

We specialise in bat surveys, but are also trained arborists and tree surgeons, a cross section of skill and experience that make us remarkably suitable for projects such as these.

We started by endoscoping a potential feature - a tree hole in the oak tree. It was there that we uncovered a maternity colony of Daubenton's and Natterer's bats.

We returned to the tree later that evening to conduct an emergence survey, which would give us an accurate count of how many bats of each species were roosting in the tree.

In these circumstances, a licence with Natural Resources Wales needs to be applied for, and mitigation needs to be agreed upon to ensure that the roost is not lost and these fantastic little creatures have a safe place to rest and have their babies.
