Bat Survey - Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire

Background

Recently, we surveyed these two sheds in Llandeilo for bat roosting potential. These pair of sheds haven't been used or touched in a long time, and as such, there were plans to demolish them to make room for additional residential parking. Driving down that narrow street, it was very obvious to us why this additional parking was necessary!

Assessing Roosting Potential

The first of the sheds had no obvious bat access points, with even less potential roosting areas, with an asbestos roof and breezeblock walls. The second shed was in much better condition, with a well-sealed artificial slate roof. The only potential roosting area we identified in this shed was a gap under the fascia board on the rear of the shed.

Usually, when we find roosting potential, we would recommend additional surveys be conducted to either confirm or rule out the presence of bats. With this property, as the potential roosting area was able to be comprehensively inspected, all we needed to do was inspect the entire space with an endoscope. Since we found no bats, and no evidence of bats (e.g. bat droppings), we were able to rule out the use of this property as a bat roost and therefore avoid the necessity of additional surveys.
