Bat Survey - Derwen Fawr, Swansea

Background

Recently, we were commissioned to carry out a Preliminary Roost Assessment on this large and interesting property in Derwen Fawr. Following extensive flooding, the property is no longer occupied, and all of the internal doors are open to air out the building and mitigate against some of the water damage. The owner wanted to take this opportunity to undergo some major internal and external renovations, making it necessary to be granted planning permission with Swansea Council.

Scoping Survey

On our initial walkthrough the property, we immediately noticed low numbers of bat droppings scattered throughout the property on various floors, so we had an idea that bats are able to access the property and are probably able to fly through the whole property due to the open doors and gaps in the ceilings.

When we got to the loft space, there was a boiler room that when we went in, we found a concentration of bat droppings on the floor. After a long winter with our furry friends asleep, these droppings alone got us excited (such is the life of an ecologist - getting excited over poo). We also found a shower tray full of bat droppings in the basement, and got so excited, we almost missed the main attraction this property had to offer - a hibernating lesser horseshoe bat!

This is such a unique and exciting property that just kept giving. We are looking forward to seeing what the DNA testing reveals about the other species !
